Padua

padua.jpg

One of the main reasons for this trip to Italy was to visit the city of Padua (Padova in Italian) so that I could see and source pictures of a new innovation in urban transport.

Known as the 'Translohr', this is a tram / streetcar which runs on rubber tyres and uses a single centrally located steel rail for guidance and electric return.

At the time of writing (June 2007) the Padua system is only partially open. Translohr systems are also being installed in 3 other Italian cities and have have recently opened in France and China (one city in each country).

This photograph was taken about 5 minutes before my camera malfunctioned, which is a shame as I would have liked to have been able to include in this online photo album some photographs of the buildings from this city too. However there are a few video clips (links on the page after next).
